Employing doulas: A sustainable, evidence-based solution to health inequity

Three doulas stand in front of patterned Aboriginal artwork.

In ten years of operation, our small, but mighty team of staff and volunteers have supported over 900 women and gender diverse birthing people to have more positive experiences in the public maternity system. There are so many highlights and milestones that we have celebrated along the way – but we are particularly proud of the impact of our doula employment program.

Last year we piloted and employment pathway for women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to train and work as doulas with Birth for Humankind. Plus, just three employed doulas supported 30% of our clients during that period – that’s 50 birth, extended postnatal or late-term abortion support services to 34 women and gender diverse birthing parents.

The evaluation report summarises the huge success of this program and the operational adaptations we are making to support it. We are delighted to be able to continue casual contracts with two doulas in FY25, however to continue the program long into the future, we need your help.
