Position Statement: 2023 Referendum

31 August 2023

Birth for Humankind supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, voice, treaty and truth.

Birth for Humankind acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the true custodians of the lands now known as Australia. Sovereignty was never ceded, and compensation for this dispossession and reconciliation of ongoing injustices is long overdue.

Birth for Humankind fully supports self-determination and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s right to govern and shape their own lives.

This is why we support the calls of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and actively encourage a ‘yes’ vote in the Referendum.

We believe achieving a Voice to Parliament should be a first step in an ongoing process, that must also be accompanied by Treaty and Truth.

Throughout this continued struggle, Birth for Humankind commits to listen to, respect and include differing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives on the Voice process.

We will stand beside First Nation’s communities and actively use our work and platform to help create the required deep structural and cultural change, to decolonise systems that continue to disadvantage and discriminate against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
